Didn’t realize the XC90 looked that good in black, wow.

They have a presence alright.

Not keen on the fluorescent wheel nut caps (they are supposed to show if one of the nuts is working loose.

HiLux is a good choice

i’m surprised the police keep cars till 200k miles (320k km)

our force turn them over at 120k km.

Not sure if i like them better than the X3 or X5's that’s also in use.
The flouro caps, yeah no, look shitty, but defo a good touch on cars that regularly go high speeds. Is the UK suffering waves of people getting their wheel nuts/bolts loosend/removed as vandalism aswell? Was a big issue here in denmark a while back.

Those old BMW X5s were used as ARVs and pretty solid cars.

Our county is one of the largest in England but also one of the least populated so money for replacing cars more often isn’t there.

Most forces get their own cars either buying, leasing or a mixture of both, this new batch was an amalgamation of several forces to use buying power to get a better deal.

These XC90s are replacing the BMW X5s (one a 2012 and three from 2013). The fluorescent caps are more commonly found on HGV trucks

To give a quick visual check if a nut has worked loose over time.

Kinja'd!!!

This one below would appear to have worked lose so would need to go into the garage to be torque checked.

Kinja'd!!!

Never heard of anything like someone going round loosening wheel nuts, ever.

I didn’t know that was a thing.

I’m guessing the new mot laws are already bringing in some cash ;)

That is seriously a thing. And those Hilux are better for being fitted with them. Overladen Toyota 4x4‘s spit wheel nuts like toddlers lose teeth.

They are common on HGVs. Very rarely on anything not an articulated truck.

I wonder why they went for black instead of white (or blue!) Volvos... Looks odd.

There are some companies that are ditching diesel altogether and there’s too much up in the air about diesels and what’s going to happen such as taxes, congestion charges, etc... there are some places in the U.K. and Europe where EU5 diesels are banned from entering, some putting higher charges on EU6 diesels, etc... we probably got petrols as some of the larger cities in the group needed them for local requirements while Cumbria is a large expansive area where the vehicles capabilities are more important than it’s fuel type.

Probably a degree of resale value. Certain colours depreciate faster than others. A few years back a lot of the manufacturers were considering stopping offering white as an option and so some forces got some silver cars, some tried black, etc...

Generally black, white or silver is the norm while red is used for DPG (diplomatic protection group) in and around London.

Given how complex the emissions standards really are, I honestly feel that most of it is PR; you can sell “clean”(as clean as gasoline) diesel engines without much issue; just put in a bigger filter and an urea tank that actually drains once in a while... really it’s not that big a deal.... people tend to demonize diesel without remember why gasoline was demonized in the first place. It might be Diesel harming humans in urban areas (NOX) more than cars (maybe). But gasoline is less efficient and causes a lot of CO2, so that’s bad for the environment.

In the end if I was in charge of the police force here in Mexico they would be going around in jetta sportwagon diesels and fiesta ST estates, maybe a few kia stinger GTs for pursuit purposes, but most police work nowadays is handled with logistics and walkie talkies, so a Stinger might be overkill.

Shame we don’t get most of the cars I listed.

XC90 seems a bit pricey for a police vehicle. I remember someone on Oppo got one when they first came out, then a minor ding to one of the headlight housings was a $2,500 part.

Cool car, but I’d probably show up at a town council meeting with some questions about operating and insurance costs on that.

Some fuckwits intentionally loosened the nuts on an ambulance a few years back somewhere in Germany.

Diesels are too much of a mine field at the moment but there are many factors when choosing a vehicle.

Some police forces do use the cars you mentioned but each constabulary source their own vehicles.

The issue we have that some MPs have brought up is that hardly any of the cars around the country are U.K. built.

But there is a E.U. rule that services have to go with the best deal they can get within the spec required of the vehicles.

The cars won’t have tax on them and there is an E.U. rule that with the requirements of the vehicle met, the service has to go with the best deal so they can’t be nationalistic or favour a certain marque but get the best deal and go with it as it’s tax payers money.

It’s already been brought up by MPs that many of the cars on U.K. police forces aren’t British built but for the police, fire, ambulance, etc... their hands are tied.

It seems like a practical law, I mean. I can’t wrap my head around why FCA had such a strongold on mexican police vehicles in rhe city (chargers, Avengers, Rams1500, etc) but now we’re changing to Fusion hybrids which are really cool cus officers want the macho-man image of the charger but they silently wosh around the streets instead

It is but while the Vauxhall Astra is a nice car, it’s more a community police vehicle than a performance or rugged utility vehicle, we may see more Honda Civics over time but generally Land Rover and Jaguar can’t compete with prices Vauxhall and Ford can do.

The BMW is still king for many places.

Hmm, well. Some municipalities bought F150s and Ford Taurus that arent made here but meh, I’d rather see them in a 4 cyl car saving fuel than a big gas guzzling v8 charger

For us it’s all about functionality.

This Landie isn’t going to be doing any police chases, but great for getting to and around farm communities.
